The Future of Work
Business Transformation Case

“What will the future job profile of our employees look like? How do they want to learn and grow within the company, and what are their expectations? And how should the ideal workplace be designed in the future so that they can perform their tasks efficiently?”
Workbench Lab
In a series of Workbench Labs, we began by laying the groundwork for the new job profile of the future train operator—that is, we developed the personas, motivations, and needs for long-term commitment to the company, reflecting its growing multiculturalism and diversity. In the second step, we created a portfolio for the further development of a learning and knowledge platform based on existing training tools. In the third step, we developed a concept for the driver’s cab of the planned ICE 2030 train. All concepts are now in the implementation phase, and we are now tackling another challenge for the future.
Together with ... and dos Santos, we have transformed the future job profile of the nearly 3,000 long-distance train drivers and developed a catalog of measures that shows us how we need to change—including in our leadership practices—in order to efficiently and effectively integrate new and young employees into our company. The large number of our future train drivers who will replace those retiring due to age over the next 10 years poses a particular challenge for this task.
Based on the diverse needs of these different employee groups, the concept for future learning and knowledge management was designed in a subsequent step. As a third step, the vision and conceptual framework for the future workplace—the train cab—were developed. As part of another groundbreaking project on employee experience, which drew on data from approximately 22,000 employees, including managers, ... and dos Santos played a key role in identifying critical moments for an improved work experience.
This involved establishing new foundations, such as a modern employee lifecycle, determining the factors influencing work performance, and developing essential measures—including the need to train managers in a progressive leadership style. The transformation model implemented by …and dos Santos fosters a genuine shift in mindset among participants while simultaneously promoting successful collaboration across different hierarchical levels and functional areas, with a clear focus on the individual—both as an employee and as a manager. We are convinced that this unique approach is crucial for sustainably improving the well-being of our employees and leaders alike, thereby transforming our organization and making it fit for the future.
This think tank brings together selected experts and in-depth research to identify problems from different perspectives in collaboration with our teams and to identify practical solutions. Time and again, a stimulating work atmosphere is created that not only exceeds our expectations but also ensures that the results are successfully integrated into our organization. We are not only impressed by the model and expertise of …and dos Santos, but also by the speed and proven effectiveness of their unique collective approach to generating ideas, strategies, and implementations.
